Magento to Shopify Migration Without Losing SEO: The Replatforming Playbook

Denis Antonov · 8 min read · 24 Jul 2026

Abstract glassmorphism visual of data moving between two platforms

A platform migration is open-heart surgery on a revenue-generating asset. Done well, nobody outside the team notices anything except a faster store. Done badly, it shows up as a step change in organic traffic that takes a year to claw back, if it comes back at all.

We work on both sides of this fence. ITechX builds and runs Shopify stores, and we also maintain Magento estates, so we have no religious position on the platforms. What follows is the playbook we use when a Magento to Shopify migration is genuinely the right call.

First, decide whether you should migrate at all

Shopify wins on speed to market, total cost of ownership and clean international storefronts. Magento, or Adobe Commerce, wins when you have complex catalogue logic, layered B2B pricing, or deep custom integrations that off-the-shelf apps cannot express. If your Magento store exists mostly to serve a straightforward DTC catalogue, and your team spends more time maintaining the platform than improving the store, migration usually pays for itself. If your business logic is genuinely bespoke, be honest about the cost of rebuilding it inside Shopify's constraints before committing.

The rest of this article assumes the decision is made.

The three assets you are actually migrating

Teams fixate on the theme and forget that the theme is the cheapest part. A migration moves three assets, in ascending order of fragility:

  • Data. Products, variants, customers, order history, reviews, gift cards, discount logic. Losing order history breaks customer accounts and lifetime value reporting; losing review content deletes social proof you spent years earning.
  • Search equity. Every URL that ranks, every backlink pointing at a category page, every product snippet Google has learned to trust. This is the asset that dies quietly and expensively.
  • Operational muscle memory. Fulfilment workflows, ERP and accounting integrations, email flows, support macros. The store can be perfect and the launch still fails because the warehouse cannot print labels.

Plan the project around all three, not around the design reveal.

SEO parity: the discipline that saves the migration

Magento and Shopify structure URLs differently, and Shopify enforces its own path patterns for products and collections. That means most migrations rewrite every indexable URL on the site. The defence is a redirect map built before development starts, not after launch.

The process we follow:

  • Crawl the existing store completely. Export every indexable URL with its traffic, revenue and backlink profile. This crawl is the master inventory; nothing gets lost that is on the list.
  • Map one-to-one wherever possible. Old product URL to new product URL, old category to new collection. Redirect chains and lazy "redirect everything to the homepage" shortcuts are how rankings die. Homepage redirects in bulk are treated by search engines as soft 404s.
  • Preserve on-page signals. Titles, meta descriptions, heading structure and internal linking should carry over deliberately. A migration is a tempting moment to rewrite everything; resist doing both at once, because if traffic drops you will not know which change caused it.
  • Recreate structured data. Product schema, breadcrumbs and organisation markup need to exist on day one, not in a post-launch cleanup.
  • Mind the details that hide in Magento. Layered navigation pages, search parameter URLs and old CMS pages often carry more long-tail traffic than anyone expects. The crawl finds them; the map decides their fate explicitly.

Data migration without corruption

Product data usually moves cleanly. The traps are elsewhere. Customer passwords cannot be migrated between the platforms' hashing schemes, so plan the account reactivation flow and the communication around it. Order history can be imported for reporting continuity, but decide early which system remains the source of truth for accounting. SKU structures that drifted over years of Magento life should be cleaned before import, not after: a migration is the one moment where catalogue hygiene is cheap.

Run the migration into a development store first, reconcile counts line by line, and have someone from operations, not development, sign off that a sample of real orders, customers and products looks right.

The launch weekend

A migration launch is a sequence, not an event:

  1. Freeze content changes on the old store.
  2. Final delta import of orders and customers.
  3. DNS cutover with the redirect map live from the first minute.
  4. Immediate crawl of the new store to catch broken redirects and missing pages.
  5. Submit the new sitemap in Search Console and monitor coverage daily for the first weeks.

Expect some ranking turbulence for a few weeks even in a clean migration. What separates a healthy migration from a disaster is the slope after that window: parity and recovery, or a plateau at a lower level. The redirect map and on-page parity decide which one you get.

What it costs to skip this

We are regularly asked to rescue migrations executed as theme rebuilds with the SEO left for later. The pattern is always the same: organic revenue drops sharply after launch, the redirect map is assembled under pressure months later, and recovery takes far longer than the original project would have. The cheapest time to do migration SEO is before the migration.

Key takeaways

  • Migrate for the right reasons: platform fit and total cost of ownership, not fashion.
  • The theme is the cheapest asset in the move. Data, search equity and operations are the expensive ones.
  • Build the full redirect map from a complete crawl before development starts, and keep on-page signals stable through the move.
  • Reconcile data in a development store and rehearse the launch sequence. The launch is a checklist, not a hope.
